Jawbone UP24 1,000,000 Step Challenge

Fitness bands are hot right now! I decided I would see what all the hubbub was about and did a little research. I wanted something without a readout. I also wanted something that synched automatically via Bluetooth to my phone, and I also wanted something that would hold a charge for at least a week. The one that appealed to me the most was the Jawbone UP24 On December 6,2014 I bought one for $129 at Best Buy. As of 12/26/14, the Jawbone website has them for $99! This blog post will a review, and contain analysis, of my experience with the Jawbone UP24 as I challenge myself to walk one million steps in 100 days.

Data Source: Tony’s Jawbone UP24 iPhone 5C app. I have loaded all the data into Tableau to do various analyses. The app is great but I haven’t found a way to show more than a week’s worth of activity at a time.

Dec. 25, 2014:  Christmas Day was a great day for walking. We generally celebrate and give gifts on Christmas Eve which leaves Christmas Day wide open for activities. After a nice, 3-mile walk with my wife, my older son, and Blanche (our Aussie) in the morning, I was out again in the evening walking at the BHS track. I am not having too much trouble keeping up the pace of 10,000 steps per day but I do find myself struggling to consistently get 8 hours of sleep.

Dec. 21, 2014: Yesterday was my laziest day by far! I just couldn’t get off the couch so my steps took a big hit. It was first time I was under 60% of goal. Remember, my goal of 10,000 is pretty high, but even at a goal of 7,000, yesterday would have stunk ! I made up for by sleeping at 120% of goal……fatigue? Yeah, I guess….

Dec. 17, 2014: This second week has been a little tougher. Busy days at work have me ignoring my 30 minute “idle alert” to move ! I really like how I don’t even notice that I am wearing my band most of the time. Yesterday, however, I almost had it forcibly removed from my wrist by a vending machine ! Maybe I shouldn’t have been going for that Cliff bar so soon after lunch…

Dec. 13, 2014: End of Week 1 and I am killin’ it ! 87,040 steps in 7 days which averages out to over 12,400 steps per day. Woo Hoo ! I probably won’t be able to keep that up but it was good to see what was possible with a couple of good, long walks book-ending the week. Last Saturday, the day I bought the band, I had committed to a city hike with my son, and we covered some miles from the later afternoon into the evening, going through Capitol Hill, First Hill, Pioneer Square and the West Edge of Seattle. Always loved urban hikes, especially in the evening. Last April, my buddy and I covered 13 miles in 4 1/2 hours starting and ending at UW, and covering Madison Valley, Capitol Hill, Downtown, Queen Anne and Fremont. It was a Sunday so we got to chow down at the Fremont Sunday Market! That day was probably well over 25,000 steps.

Dec. 07, 2014: Bought myself a Jawbone UP24 yesterday! Kind of an early Christmas present and a motivator to keep active during our gloomy winter months here in Seattle. I really like the simplicity of the band, it’s buttons and the app. The screenshot below shows my very active first day with it, and I will describe that later. I set up some really basic features and will continue to fine tune as I go along. One of my biggest concerns was the step length calibration. With such a long walk yesterday, found it to be accurate to within 0.1 of a mile over near 9.5 miles. Seems like it has me at 2.6 feet per stride. I will continue to monitor that.
